Ashish Cherukuri, Sergio Grammatico and Mircea Lazar have the pleasure to invite you to participate to the DISC Summer School “Control of Power and Energy Systems”, which will place in September 12-15, 2023, in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands.
Control is ubiquitous in modern power and energy systems across virtually all time scales and system sizes, from high efficiency multi-level power electronics to power generation and storage in smart power grids, as well as to coordination mechanisms in day-ahead and intra-day energy markets. The 2023 DISC Summer School aims at presenting the most relevant control and optimization methodologies in these application areas via tutorial lectures and research oriented talks.
The main topics of this Summer School are:
– Control of Power Electronics and Power-Electronics-Dominated Systems
– Analysis and Control of Power Systems
– Optimization of Power Systems
– Coordination and Optimization of Energy Markets
The class will be a mix of lectures and tutorials with hands-on implementation of state-of-the-art algorithms. Participants will have ample opportunity to discuss their own research with the speakers and amongst each other.
Lecturers
The main program will consist of a number of international and national speakers. The confirmed keynote lectures are:
-Prof. Johannes Schiffer, Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany
-Prof. John Simpson-Porco, University of Toronto, Canada
-Prof. Henrique Mallada, Johns Hopkins University, USA
Program and set-up
The Summer School starts on Tuesday September 12th at 9.00h. The program ends on Friday September 15th around 15.00h.
Credits
PhD students can obtain 1 EC for the DISC Summer School. We expect active participation in the assignments and discussions.
Please already block the dates in your agenda. Registration will start once the program is finalized.
The next “Learning to Run a Power Network” (L2RPN) competition is happening in the Netherlands!
The L2RPN is a series of competitions designed to train an Artificial Intelligence (AI) agent to operate a power network. The L2RPN Delft 2023 competition offers an exciting and exclusive opportunity for students and researchers in the Netherlands to test their AI solutions against others in a realistic and challenging environment, collaborate with fellow innovators, and win prizes up to €1500!
You are invited to visit the competition website and join the kick-off meeting to learn more about the competition!

Luuk Poort won the Best Junior Presenter Award at the Benelux Meeting. The engraved plate had to be ordered and added to the Trophy.
The trophy was officially handed out to Luuk Poort on April 25, 2023 in Eindhoven.
The Organizing Committee has the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the 12th IFAC Symposium on Fault Detection, Supervision and Safety for Technical Processes, to take place in Ferrara, Italy, 4 – 7 June 2024, under the auspices of IFAC, the International Federation of Automatic Control.
The SAFEPROCESS Symposium is organized every three years, and for the first time from its first edition in 1991, it takes place in Italy.
The SAFEPROCESS Symposium is a major international gathering of leading experts in the academia and industry from all over the worlds. It aims at strengthening the contact between the academia and industry to build up new networks and cultivate existing relations.

Emeritus professor Dynamics and Control Henk Nijmeijer looks back on 23 years of professorship in Controlling the Dynamics

Name: Alberto Garzás Villar
Starting date: 01-04-2023
Function: PhD
Email: A.GarzasVillar@tudelft.nl
Group: TUD – 3ME – CoR
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Laura Marchal-Crespo (TUD) and Prof. Dr. Jane Cramm (Erasmus University of Rotterdam)
My name is Alberto Garzás Villar, and I am proud to announce my incorporation into the CoR group. I come from Spain, where I obtained my bachelor’s degree as a mechanical engineer. When I finished it, I started a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. It led me to my first interaction with motor learning and neurorehabilitation. During my thesis, I had the opportunity to work with the MLN lab in Bern, Switzerland. My task would be to develop a serious game for stroke patients’ rehabilitation.
As I enjoyed the project, it cannot stop there, so I will keep working in this field during my Ph.D. studies. My research will focus on how patients’ diversity affects the effectiveness of robotic motor learning.
It is known that new robot devices can provide different possibilities to understand and accelerate sensorimotor training. But dealing with people and so complex diseases means that specific factors such as personal treatment, gender, cultural profile, etc., should not be overlooked. For this reason, I will take on the task of measuring those factors and developing more personalized and tailored training methods.
This interdisciplinary work is born from the collaboration between TU Delft, Erasmus MC, and Erasmus University Rotterdam. Therefore, I will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Laura Marchal-Crespo, from TU Delft and Prof. Dr. Jane Cramm, from the Erasmus University of Rotterdam.
In a personal way, I consider myself an energetic person who loves sports and socializing. I now enjoy climbing, paddle tennis, and football, but any sport is welcome! Also, I love to travel to new places and never stop learning. I hope to meet many new people in this new project and enjoy the world of motor learning, neurorehabilitation, robotics, and much more!

Supervisor: Dr. Hassan HosseinNia
Hi everyone, my name is Endre and I am from Norway. I recently started working on a PhD project under the supervision of Dr. Hassan HosseinNia in the Mechatronics System Design group. Through this project I am studying the implementation of and methods for controlling of the magnetisation states of permanent magnets, to enable maintained actuation forces with zero heat dissipation.
Prior to my PhD I also studied for my MSc degree at TU Delft and before that I lived in the UK for a few years while studying for a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Leeds. In my free time I enjoy cycling and working out. I also like to go freeride skiing whenever I am in Norway.
