Newsletter June 2016

Message from the DISC office

Dear all,

Welcome to the DISC newsletter of June 2016! From June 14-17 the DISC Summer School “A Systems and Control Perspective in Human Robot Environment Interaction” took place  in Zandvoort, the Netherlands. It was a very successful event and of course some photo’s are included further on in the newsletter. We would like to thank the organizers Raffaella Carloni, Jens Kober, Manuel Mazo and Alessandro Saccon for doing a great job!

Before everything closes down for the summer we want to have the new course program ready. We are working hard at that right now and will keep you updated via the website.

We would also like to congratulate Sarthak Misra who has been awarded a VIDI grant. The next newsletter will be published in August so we wish those of you who have vacation plans a relaxing and enjoyable time!

With best regards,

Henk Nijmeijer,
scientific director

DISC courses 2016-2017

We are still working on the course program for 2016-2017. When the course program is ready it will be published on the website so please check there for updates. The following courses will in principle be included:

Mathematical Models of System
Design Methods for Control Systems
Distributed Parameter Systems

Modeling and Control of Hybrid Systems
Nonlinear Control Systems
Linear Matrix Inequalities for Control

By the time the registration opens our new “DISC course platform” will also be up and running. This is the successor to the DISC “forum website”. It will have the same functionalities but the look will be updated and we will also create an opportunity for you to get an overview of your DISC grades en ECTS.

Summer School 2016

Participants Summer School 2016

From June 14-17 the Summer School was held in Centerparcs Zandvoort and we can look back at it as very successful. This year’s topic was “A Systems and Control Perspective in Human-Robot-Environment Interaction”. The organizers were Raffaella Carloni, Jens Kober, Manuel Mazo Espinosa and Alessandro Saccon and they did an excellent job. 40 participants from the Netherlands and other European countries such as Italy, Germany and Finland enjoyed four days of lectures by international experts, alternated with tutorial sessions which afforded a good opportunity to interact with the lecturers. A lively poster session for which many of the attendees had brought a poster also helped to establish interaction.

VIDI grant for Sarthak Misra

The goal of SAMURAI is to design a robotic system to steer magnetically-actuated flexible probes using ultrasound (US) images for accurate feedback, and thereby enable precise delivery of agents to a designated target.

The VIDI grant is part of the NWO Innovational Research Incentives Scheme. This funding scheme offers personal grants to talented, creative, and experienced researchers. It aims to boost innovative research and promotes mobility within scientific research institutes.

Vacancies

Eindhoven University

2 PhD and 2 Postdoc positions in “Data-driven modelling in dynamic networks”

In the control systems group of Eindhoven University of Technology, department of electrical engineering, there are open positions for two PhD students (four years) and two postdocs (two year positions with possible extensions) in a new research project on system identification in dynamic networks. The project is an ERC Advanced Research project, led by Prof. Paul Van den Hof, and will comprise a total of 7 researchers.
Topics to be covered include, experiment design, topology and network identification, sensor and actuator optimization, identification for distributed control, algorithm and software development, and development of applications in high-tech domains (e.g. smart grids, large-scale process control).

We are looking for candidates with an excellent background in system identification, data analysis, machine learning, modelling and/or systems & control, and a strong drive towards fundamental research in a high-tech environment.  Candidates are expected to be team players in an international environment.

Hello everybody! My name is Françoise, I am 30 years old and was born in Almelo, the Netherlands. I received my bachelor and master degree in Technical Medicine both from the University of Twente with specialty in Robotics and Imaging.
At the end of 2010 I moved to Norway and started working at the psychiatric division of the Stavanger University Hospital with a special focus on brain imaging. In 2012 I started working on my PhD project, dopamine transporter (DaT) SPECT imaging and Lewy body dementia, at the Centre for age-related medicine, and affiliated with the department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Bergen. After completion of my PhD and competence as Technical physician, I recently started as a Postdoc candidate on the MURAB project in the Robotics and Mechatronics group, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science, University of Twente. The aim of the project is to improve the precision of diagnostic biopsies and the effectiveness of the workflow in breast cancer and muscle disease by combining MRI and Ultrasound in robotic assisted biopsy.
