Dear all,
Welcome to the DISC newsletter of May 2016! This Monday the last two DISC classes of the academic year 2015-2016 were held. The courses were well attended this year and we hope you have found them useful and interesting. If you have suggestions for improvement we encourage you to let us know. Of course we are now busy planning next year’s course program and hope to have more information on that soon.
We are also in the midst of preparations for the Summer School “A Systems and Control Perspective in Human Robot Environment Interaction” which will be held from June 14-17 in Zandvoort, the Netherlands. Registration remains open until May 31, so if you’re interested it is still possible to join!
We wish those of you who defend their theses this month good luck and also a warm welcome to new people!
With best regards,
Henk Nijmeijer,
scientific director
Martha Otte,
DISC secretariat
We are still working on the course-program 2016-2017. It will feature some old favorites but there are also some new courses in the make. In the next issue of the newsletter we hope to have a preliminary program ready.
Raffaella Carloni, Jens Kober, Manuel Mazo Espinosa and Alessandro Saccon have the pleasure to invite you to participate in the DISC Summer School on “A Systems and Control Perspective in Human Robot Environment Interaction”, which is scheduled to take place from June 14-17, 2016, at “Centerparcs park Zandvoort”, Zandvoort, The Netherlands.
The invitation is aimed at research students, staff members, researchers and engineers engaged in the systems and control area. Distinguished speakers will each present a series of tutorial lectures.
Human Robot Environment Interaction
Robotics is moving away from strictly controlled factory floors and slowly entering our daily lives. Examples include industrial production, household assistance, care, medicine, and agriculture. Next generation of robots will need to interact with their environment, with each other, and with humans. This transition is driven by emerging societal needs and will be enabled by advances in perception, actuation, and computational power, but also by suitable modeling and control aspects tailored to robotic systems. This poses challenging questions to the research community that still require fully satisfying answers.
In this summer school, particular attention will be given to:

The main program will consist of various speakers. Keynote lectures will be given by:
Registration
The registration fee, which includes full board and lodging, is
You will be staying in a comfort cottage with two or three people. You will have your own bedroom. Sheet package, towel package, kitchen package and swimming pool access are included.
The school is limited to 75 participants based on a first-come first-serve policy. The registration deadline is May 31, 2016
Registration is now open. Register on the forum website or send an email to m.w.otte@tudelft.nl
The 2016 winter course on Power Systems Control – from Circuits to Economics was very successful. In 2017 we would like to organize another winter course and we hereby invite all staff members to send us their ideas for topics/speakers.
The winter course generally takes three days and As possible dates we are looking at December 2016/early 2017..
If you have ideas or are interested in organizing a winter course please email Martha Otte m.w.otte@tudelft.nl
Preceding the 2nd IFAC Workshop on Control of Systems Governed by Partial Differential Equations there will be a Summer School on this topic, titled “An Introduction to Modelling and Control of Systems Governed by PDES”. The Summer School will be held at the University Residential Centre of Bertinoro, Bertinoro, Italy.
The scope of the summer school is to provide a succinct but rigorous introduction to systems modelled by partial differential equations. The school is open to all aspiring scholars in any area of mathematics or engineering who wish to work on PDEs of any kind (whether theoretical or applied), and it is especially addressed to doctoral students and young postdoctoral scholars. The aim of the school is to deepen into both theoretical developments and applications.
The school focuses on four main topics
* Modelling,
* Analysis,
* Numerical aspects, and
* Control design.
For more information and registration, please visit the website: http://www.cpde2016.org/summer-school/
The SHERPA Summer School 2016 is a five-day course to provide participants with a full overview of major aspects and research activities concerning robotics in search and rescue scenarios. The school is primarily directed to PhD and Postdoc students whose research interests are in robotics.
More information can be found here.
As of July 1, 2016, former DISC lecturer and board member Hans Schumacher will retire from his position of Professor of Mathematics at Tilburg University. His farewell lecture will take place in the main auditorium of the university on Friday, June 24, at 16:15.
Hans Schumacher was a DISC board member from 1999 to 2005 and taught various DISC courses, among which the course Hybrid Systems.
We wish Hans a happy retirement and thank him for contributions to DISC!

Hello everybody! My name is Soheila, I was born in , Shahrekord, Iran. I received my bachelor degree in control systems engineering and my MSc degree in Biomedical Engineering both from University of Tehran. My main research experiences were in image processing and computational neuroscience. During my master study I focused on computational modeling of Long Term Potentiation based on the structure of tripartite synapse.
Since first May, I have started working as a researcher on the Panosurg project in Robotics and Mechatronics group, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science, University of Twente. My project aimed at developing a computer algorithm to create a 3D model of an internal surgical cavity using the monocular endoscopic video feed.
