Symposium on automated vehicles – September 8 from 13:00 – 17:00 – Automotive Campus Helmond

Prior to my PhD defense (September 9 in Delft), I will organize a symposium on automated vehicles at the Automotive Campus in Helmond on September 8 from 13:00 till 17:00.
A diverse list of (international) speakers from academia, R&D, and governmental institutes will present their views on (the future of) automated and autonomous vehicles. I think this symposium is an excellent opportunity for anyone with interests in vehicle automation to discuss with fellow scientists, engineers, policymakers, etc. the aspects and challenges of automated vehicles.

Attendance is free and you will be welcomed from 12:30 will coffee and tea. Drinks and snacks will be served afterwards.

You can find more information on https://sites.google.com/view/symposium-automated-vehicles/.

Please, register at https://forms.gle/jjBUebwmfcoWB4EK8

The speakers will be:

  • Erwin de Gelder (TNO, organizer) – Welcome speech
  • Sergio Grammatico (TU Delft) – Autonomous driving via game theoretic control
  • Andrea Leitner (AVL, Austria) – Challenges of safety assessment for ADAS/AD
  • Henk Nijmeijer (TU Eindhoven) – Challenges and contributions in cooperative and automated vehicles
  • Jeroen Ploeg (Siemens) – Does automated driving need V2X communication?
  • Riender Happee (TU Delft) – Motion comfort in automated driving
  • Riccardo Donà and Sándor Vass (JRC, Italy) – Multi-pillar approach for new ADS type approval framework
  • Sytze Kalisvaart (TNO) – Comparability and exchangeability of scenario databases

Project: The development of ordinary differential equation theory and computational models for the sense of smell

My name is Radu and I am delighted to have joined the Systems, Control and Optimization as a PhD student.

My educational background is quite complex, starting with a Bachelor in Engineering and Management (2015), followed by a Master in Fundamental Structures in Mathematics (2017). Both have been achieved in my home country of Romania, at Transilvania University of Brasov. After a second Master`s degree obtained at the University of Groningen in the field of Dynamical Systems (2021), my interest towards applied mathematics was raised and thus, here I am as a PhD student working on a project entitled  “The development of ordinary differential equation theory and computational models for the sense of smell”.  This topic offers me the chance to improve on existing models for the sense of smell, while at the same time giving the opportunity to use this improvement towards the development of electronic noses destined to detect lung cancer as means of non-invasive detection methods.

As guessed the project entails a multidisciplinary approach, thus I will work together with colleagues from Biophysics and Material Science to tackle the scientific challenges that await.
My interests cover subjects that deal with Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Differential Equations, Probability theory and Statistics, and outside mathematics, subjects such as Biochemistry, Forensics, Economy.
At a personal level, I like to spend my free time reading, especially detective novels, attending classical music concerts, visiting museums of history, art, science, and if given time, travel (which combines the aforementioned activities).

Hello everyone! My name is Thomas Edridge and a little while back I joined the Sensor AI Lab. I have previously studied Mechanical Engineering and Systems and Control at the TU Delft. I am looking forward to continue at the TUDelft as a PhD candidate.

In my PhD I will explore how can we close the bridge between Sensor Fusion and AI. In other words, how we can incorporate physical knowledge into scalable Gaussian Processes. The goal is to extract more information from available sensor data. A Gaussian process is a machine learning (data-driven) tool for regression which can learn very non-linear functions. This allows for (in our research field e.g.) the modelling of the ambient magnetic field. This magnetic field can then be used to detect loop closures for a robot driving around, reducing the uncertainty in its position. This begs the question and initial direction of my research: how can we make us of this information in a GP framework?

In my free time I enjoy the frequent game of squash, going for a run, or go cycling. Most evenings you can find me in the kitchen trying out a new recipe I discovered. I am an enthusiastic (home)cook who is continuously looking for new techniques/recipes to improve my skillset.

Hello everyone! My name is Gianpietro Battocletti and I come from Italy.

I’ll be starting my PhD in “Learning-based cooperative multi-agent control” at DCSC under the supervision of prof. Bart De Schutter. I will be working on the path planning and coordination for the submarine robots of the SeaClear project.

I got my Bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering at the University of Trento and my Master’s in Mechatronic Engineering at Politecnico di Torino, where I developed a reinforcement-learning based path planning algorithm for autonomous UAVs. My main research interests regard autonomous robotics, artificial intelligence and reinforcement learning, and collaborative robotic systems.

In my free time I enjoy playing and listening to music, bouldering, analog photography and cooking.
